Apply top online content marketing tips

July 5, 2011 in "How-To" posts, Business, Interviews by admin  |  No Comments

Consider using these online content marketing tips from the expert marketing bloggers on the OpenView Labs blog. Here are our three favorites.

From Jay Baer, Social Media Strategist and Speaker:

Tip #1: Atomize your content.

Take your big idea and turn it into many, smaller pieces. You’ll reach far more people that way, and each piece of content is more bait in the water for the guy that’s really your most important customer: Google.

From C.C. Chapman, Co-Author, Content Rules:

Tip #2: Stop waiting to be perfect and start creating content today.

The more you create, the better you’ll get.

Tip #3: Remember to be human in everything you create.

Talk, write and share the way you do with your friends rather than creating buzzword-filled blasts that no one wants.

Following the experts’ advice, we invited Evoca subscribers to record their own audio testimonials in their own voices. Read more

Avoid weasel words in public speaking

June 29, 2011 in "How-To" posts, Business, Education, Public Speaking by admin  |  No Comments

TJ Walker, CEO of Media Training Worldwide, business communications expert and friend-of-Evoca, recommends that business communicators delete jargon and weasel words to avoid sounding like “bureaucratic stooges.” “Going forward,” “If you will,” “As it were,” and “To tell you the truth” are among the least effective words spoken by business communicators. At every meeting of Toastmasters International, renown worldwide public speaking organization, the “Ah-counter” helps participants break the habit of adding useless, distracting words while speaking.

Your goal … is to communicate a message in the clearest and simplest manner possible, while at the same time building your reputation as a strong and forceful communicator. Strong and forceful are relative terms, so if you use all of the same buzzwords that everyone else does, you will always seem mediocre. Many businesspeople acquire their bad rhetorical habits at some point during their second year of business school or after having attended their third annual board of directors meeting.

Here are some of the worst offenders:

“Going forward . . .” What an utterly useless phrase. Use “in the future” instead. You wouldn’t tell your teenage son, “Going forward, please keep your room straight,” so why use it in a speech or interview? The sole purpose for using a phrase like “going forward” in a speech is to create the impression that you are saying something fancier than you actually are. So please, going forward, never use the phrase “going forward.” Read more

How to use phone interviews for market research

May 31, 2011 in Blog, Latest News by mark  |  No Comments

Faria Rahman of OpenView Labs, the strategic and operational consulting arm of  Boston-based OpenView Venture Partners, shares some good advice about when it is appropriate to use phone interviews to gather accurate market research data. The entire article, “When Do Phone Interviews Make Sense for Market Research”, is available online.

As proponents of phone interview recording and Skype interview recording, which we deliver to our Evoca subscribers every day, we would like to share some highlights. To begin, Faria says,

“If the type of research you’re doing is complex…

Phone interviews can be much more effective if you’re doing a study that requires your respondents to answer multi-step questions (e.g. implementing an enterprise application). That’s because it is far easier to walk each respondent through the set of questions over the phone. In a focus group environment, that process will get confusing and chaotic.”

Faria references the blog article, “10 reasons to chose telephone interviews over focus groups” by Jacob Brown of In-Depth Technology Research, to drive the point home regarding the advantages of one-on-one phone interviews versus focus groups — which sometimes turn into “group think.” Read more

As a Toastmaster Jane Jude’s speaking and leadership expertise has grown exponentially during her 15 years as a member and club officer. Within her first 6 months as a member, Jane was impressing colleagues with her new speaking skills. Jane continues to participate because she continues to learn. Jane is in good company. In the words of MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, “Toastmasters changed my life. They really did. Put me on the stage. I don’t know what I would have done without that positive boost.”

From its founding in 1924 Toastmasters has served over four million people, and today the organization serves over 260,000 members in 113 countries, through its over 12,800 member clubs.

Language interpreters can record business and practice sessions using Evoca’s convenient voice recording service.  Recording a session is as easy as conducting a conference call by phone or Skype, which is especially convenient for international teams. When the recording session is completed, the host can email the recording to the appropriate recipients, keep it private in an Evoca account, or share it online.

These are the typical roles in a spoken word interpretation session:
